Fluid Structure Interaction

2D Starling Resistor Simulation and Experimental Movies

We have posted movies comparing experimental and simulation Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) behaviors, for 3 different tensions and various inlet pressures.

Below are Tension 1 videos in which the travelling oscillation of the experiment is quite different from that predicted by the simulation at a similar pressure inlet.

Experiment - Tension 1 - p_inlet=080.2Pa
Simulation - Tension 1 - p_inlet=070.0Pa

Below are Tension 2 videos in which simulation and experiment agree quite well, exhibiting a similar complex oscillation for a similar inlet pressure.

Experiment - Tension 2 - p_inlet=077.3Pa
Simulation - Tension 2 - p_inlet=080.0Pa

Below are Tension 2 movies in which the simulation and experiment both exhibit similar traveling oscillations, but the membrane doesn't contact the floor in the simulation prediction.

Experiment - Tension 2 - p_inlet=114.1Pa
Simulation - Tension 2 - p_inlet=110.0Pa

Below are Tension 3 results of a mode-2 oscillation pattern. Simulation and experiment find similar behaviors at a similar inlet pressure.

Experiment - Tension 3 - p_inlet=078.8Pa
Simulation - Tension 3 - p_inlet=070.0Pa

Below are Tension 3 results of a traveling oscillation pattern. Again, the simulation and experiment are quite similar in behavior at nearly the same inlet pressure.

Experiment - Tension 3 - p_inlet=121.9Pa
Simulation - Tension 3 - p_inlet=120.0Pa

Below are Tension 3 complex oscillations. The simulation and experiment are similar in oscillation patterns, but the inlet pressure is about 30 Pa higher for the experiment.

Experiment - Tension 3 - p_inlet=189.8Pa
Simulation - Tension 3 - p_inlet=150.0Pa
