April 30, 2008 Orientation Meeting for DIVA tech group Sid Fels Bob Pritchard Yin Ying Allison Lenters Eric Foxhall

This meeting was arranged so that we could discuss lab organization, the two month trajectory of development, and the allocation of tasks. We began with Sid putting together a block diagram outlining the different areas that we will be working on over the next two months. Bob will copy and refine the diagram and then distribute it.

Ying will continue refining the MMJ interface objects for the Cyberglove and Polhemus followed by the scaling code, and will then work with Allison to implement the learning module and neural network code.

Allison has just about completed the implementation of the first algorithm for the learning module and will continue developing that and then work with Ying on the integration.

Eric will begin working on the TouchGlove, developing the cable and box connections. He will then begin refining the plosives in MMJ while working with the designer Hélène Day Fraser to complete the touch switch for volume control. After that he will work on the speaker and harness system.

Version control: after some discussion it was agreed that we would use SubVersion for this. There is some experience in the tech group with it, and it runs on Macs. Because the Max/MSP/Jitter files are saved in binary format we will need to lock files to prevent multiple users from editing the same file. As well, we will need to include logs and todo lists with each file to make end-of-summer changeover easier to manage. We will set up a server account to handle version control, and we need to get the student computer accounts set up ASAP.

Hardware: we agreed to purchase a high-end Mac and will also have two laptops for development. In the meantime we can continue to use the macMinis and G5 machines. N.B. Eventually one of the laptops will become “permanently” attached to the harness setup. Licenses: we need MMJ upgrade licenses for the three machines. Bob has license codes for at least one machine but will need to figure out where the current version is.

Allison needs to have MatLab installed on a machine.

We also made arrangements to organize our new workspace in the south lab. Thursday afternoon is the best time to do this, so we’ll get together then to push things around.
