March 7, 2008 DIVA Group Meeting Present: Sid Fels, Allison Lenters, Phoebe MacRae (no dog this time), Katie McAllister, Martin Oberg, Bob Pritchard, Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson, Adriano Vilela, Marguerite Witvoet, Ying Yin

Graduate student update: 3 students interested

Oldooz Hazrati from Iran very interested, speech background
Wei Jong Lee has also expressed an interest

Report from Allison: met with Sid regarding the machine learning from MatLab – has the basics created, needs to be generalized and then will be passed to Ying. The training side of things will be started at the end of the week. Sid and Allison also discussed granularity of data – being able to record and then if necessary remove poor data examples, and also edit data after the fact using Excel spread sheet. Includes use of graphical hand for visualization of data in training to help see where errors are occurring.

Ying on current developments: continued to work on Polhemus interface, adding hemisphere input and serial port choices for different systems. Also worked on the Glove object.

Report from Eric, Marguerite regarding current work: - currently there are problems with the vowel transitions on such words as “your”. Marguertie pointed out that she needed to move directly to certain phonemes, rather than moving through all phonemes in between. An animated discussion followed, covering such things as remapping, boundary placement, scaling, etc. Eric suggested taking some of the data and implementing a new mapping procedure to see how the mapping lines up relative to hand position. Bob needs to reconfigure the boundary mapping so that Marguerite has a smaller space to work in.

Status and plans for hirings (summer and project manager) - Allison and Eric are in place, and Ying has submitted her off-campus documentation - Bob reported that neither Princeton nor Dartmouth had people who would fit the bill for project manager

New Local Only part of the website: please add possible conferences that we should know about for submissions, and provide logs of work as we progress

Lima, Peru: Marguerite is continuing investigating this. Sid reported that Discovery Channel, Knowledge Network and another network continue to make requests for access to the DIVA project.
